Last week, Wilmington University announced a new tool in support of its students, the construction industry, and the state of Delaware workforce. I just took a look back through my emails and saw that Bob Elder, Santora CPA Group, first reached out to DCA and other stakeholders in 2022 seeking input on the creation of a program that would provide college credit for graduates of apprenticeship programs. Seems like the most logical thing in the world but it took Bob and Rob Rescigno, Wilmington University, to bring this to life.
Bob has been working tenaciously with Rob to stand a program up. They reached out to as many players as they could think of, DCA, ABC, the Delaware Building Trades, to make sure their idea had legs and would be supported. The result of their work is Wilmington University and the Delaware Department of Labor announcing Wilmington University’s Smart Transfer Enrollment Program (STEP Path) for Vocational Workforce which will allow individuals in select registered apprenticeship programs the opportunity to earn up to 42 college credits towards a bachelor's degree at Wilmington University.
One of the messages DCA works hard to share with people interested in the construction industry as well as with parents of students, is the career diversity our industry offers. In Wilmington University’s press release, President Dr. LaVerne Harmon said, “Partnering with the Delaware Department of Labor for the STEP Path program aligns with our commitment to preparing diverse students to succeed in high-demand, trade-oriented careers.” This program will be a great support in expanding access to the career diversity our industry offers.
Many people outside of the construction trades do not understand what is entailed in pursuing an apprenticeship in a skilled trade craft. It takes a significant commitment, discipline, and smarts to obtain the status of journeyperson. The ability to earn 2 college credits is a well-earned recognition for that work!
