With the DCA Scholarship Committee, Chaired by Greg Sawka, Bancroft Construction, preparing to review DCA Scholarship applications soon, I thought it would be a good time to remind our members of the scholarship opportunity (there’s still time to apply) as well as ensure you are aware of other scholarship opportunities I’ve shared at various times. The recipients of these construction related scholarships are the future of our industry.
Delaware Contractors Association Scholarship
Started in 1989, the John J. McMahon Jr. Scholarship was established to provide assistance to DCA members and their dependents who wish to pursue a course of study in a construction – related field. Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2023 school year but must be received by June 30th.
The AGC Education and Research Foundation offers undergraduate and graduate level scholarships to students enrolled in ABET or ACCE -accredited construction management or construction related engineering programs.
The platform for the 2024-2025 Scholarship application for undergraduate and graduate program will open July 1 and students will have until November 1, 2023 to apply. Undergraduate program criteria can be found here and Graduate program criteria can be found here.
AGC Workforce Development Scholarships
In 2015, the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and its Build Your Future initiative made a generous contribution to AGC to help fund the first Workforce Development scholarships for students pursuing craft and technical programs, allowing 19 applicants to receive the inaugural scholarships. Scholarships are $1,000 per year, renewable for up to two years.
Lanford Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1999, the Lanford Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship® Program provides post-high school financial assistance to help the sons, daughters or legally adopted children of highway workers killed or permanently disabled on the job. The submission deadline has passed for this scholarship, April 14, 2023, but I’m including it for future reference.
Construction Angels Scholarship
The Scholarship Fund program was launched in August 2018 through the Construction Angels charity. It is supported by contributions from firms, executives, and associations within the construction industry. The Construction Angels Scholarship provides financial assistance to the sons and daughters of workers killed in the line of duty who are pursuing post-high school education within the construction industry. The submission deadline for this scholarship is July 14, 2023.
AGC/Procore HBCU Scholarship
In 2021, AGC and Procore established a scholarship program to assist African-American and minority students studying construction fields at historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs. The scholarship program is administered by the AGC Education & Research Foundation and is part of a broader effort by AGC to make the industry more diverse and inclusive. There is not a separate HBCU application so HBCU applicants will utilize the AGC links provided above.
DCA is very proud that the John J. McMahon Scholarship Trust has supported almost 60 students with over $100,000 in awards. Since its inception the Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship has awarded nearly $700,000. Over $10 million in scholarships have been awarded to more than 4,000 students through AGC’s scholarship programs. DCA and AGC along with other organizations are proud to make this investment in our industry’s future. Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested in applying for one of more of these construction industry scholarships.
