From the Desk of Executive Director Sean Matthews - January 31, 2025
It's my second week here at DCA and I am still on information overload, absorbing as much as I can and meeting members. As I'm "reading into" the organization, I have tried to block out some time to read some historical DCA documents. When looking back at these documents from past annual meetings and strategic planning sessions as well as general correspondence, I am struck by DCA's rich history.
At a 2001 planning event in St. Michaels, participants came up with 22 "issues and opportunities" (eventually whittled down to 10 objectives), many of which are still relevant today. The 1994 Annual Report highlighted 14 bills DCA supported or opposed that year, culminating with last-day-of-session negotiations among DCA, legislators and several agencies related to construction management. Another report celebrated the "Annual DCA Operators Rodeo" in which heavy equipment operators competed for cash prizes in a competition of skills with their machinery.
Over the years, much has changed but also so many of the issues remain the same. We are unique in that we have both Allied and Merit members. We are the "Voice of Construction" in Delaware. For many of the issues that affect construction in Delaware, there is wide agreement among DCA members. Our DCA voice is strong when it is united. When we work together, we can tackle most of the tough issues in a “win-win” fashion.
To highlight and renew our DCA pride and connections to each other, I have asked our Director of Membership Success, Jamie Chambers, to begin two new features of the weekly newsletter: “Member Company Spotlight” and “Employee Spotlight.” These features will be a brief interview/feature of DCA companies and employees. Look for Jamie to be reaching out as we start this feature in February.
Lastly, as we look towards growing all member companies and DCA we must renew our focus on our core values and mission. I need to hear from you how DCA is working, what issues your business is facing and what suggestions you have. One way that I would like to connect with you is offering a Calendly link. By clicking this link (https://calendly.com/smatthews-e-dca/30min) you will be able to schedule a meeting with me on Teams at a time of your choosing. I am also available for calls (484-680-2535) or coffee/lunch out in the community or here at DCA. Let’s connect.
