As we celebrate the 4th of July at DCA, it’s worth remembering that Delaware played an outsized role in our nation's independence, despite being the second smallest state. Known proudly as "The First State," Delaware was the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution on December 7, 1787—but its commitment to liberty started even earlier. Caesar Rodney, a delegate from Delaware, famously rode 80 miles through the night during a thunderstorm to cast the tie-breaking vote for independence at the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776. His bravery helped ensure that Delaware stood firmly behind the cause of American freedom.

Independence Day celebrations in Delaware have long held deep meaning. In New Castle, some of the oldest continuous July 4th festivities in the country include the reading of the Declaration of Independence from the courthouse steps—just as it was done centuries ago. From fireworks over the Christina River to historic reenactments in Dover, our state continues to honor its revolutionary roots in ways that are both patriotic and uniquely Delawarean.

At the Delaware Contractors Association, we’re especially proud of our members who have carried that same spirit of service into their own lives. To DCA members who are veterans, active-duty service members, firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and other first responders—thank you. You’ve taken up the torch of freedom and protection that our founders lit, ensuring that our communities and our country remain safe and strong.

This Independence Day, as grills fire up and flags wave high, we reflect not only on the bravery of 1776, but on the everyday heroes among us. DCA members build more than roads and structures—they build strong communities throughout Delaware. We salute you and wish all our DCA members a safe, joyful, and meaningful Fourth of July.
